Thought and Memory

My mom gave me a really great book today when I met her for lunch! It is called Bird Brains and, despite the awkward title, is a lovely book all about crows and corvids and how smart (and radically cool!) they are. Here is a little piece of information from the book that I liked quite a bit:

"In Norse mythology...the god Odin had two ravens, named Thought and Memory, that flew around the world all day and came back at night to bring him up to date on what was happening."

My Lungs: Now! UV and water resistant

Today marked day one of print sealing for the 6JG exhibit. I sprayed around 15 prints today with PrintShield protective laquer, and so now only 75 or so more to go. Mmm. I shall hope for good weather and wide open windows.

Merging Landscapes

I met Gianpaulo today down on the corner by the Grand Lake Theater so that he could give me a copy of the fine short he wrote & directed entitled "Parking Lot." I played the role of Jessica in "Parking Lot." I hadn't yet seen it and was particularly impressed by my co-star Nick's ability to make the dialog (written by a non-native English speaker) sound relatively natural. Gianpaulo, who is Swedish, is a very genuinely nice person and I thank him for that. He asked me today if I play tennis. I said no.

Later I went to IKEA and bought some stuff, including a new chest of drawers to stow things in. After a long and arduous assembly process, I installed my new piece of furniture in its designated spot and started to fill it up. One of the things I found in the process was an old book that I was writing in during and just after the end of college. I found a poem in there I liked called Merging Landscapes. I wrote it three years ago and it was talking about eating pancakes at the Sutro Baths, balancing a plate of sushi on top of an orange water cooler in Kansas, and swing dancing to mariachi music on a tennis court.

I liked it indeed and perhaps I'll take another look at it one of these days.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Oakland

Last night I went to screenprinting class with host Mark Taylor, organized by Oakland's RPS Collective. We learned all about screens, scoop cutters, and squeegees. I had an excellent time and felt like I was back in art school again, as the class was held at a residence/gallery littered with ashtrays, beer cans, and art. To my class friend: thank you for sharing your beer with me. I liked your outfit. To anyone who sees posters for the Fiber Circle class at RPS: I helped create that sucka! The moral of the story is: taking screenprinting classes is fun. And it makes you proud to be reppin' the O.

Texas in my spool

I spent a good portion of Saturday on a crafty repair mission to salvage Cale's backpack. In the process, I used up an old spool of black thread that has been around for who knows how long. When we got home late last night after an evening at Canvas in SF (props to the DJ on the Dazed & Confused samples!) I felt the urge to pick up the spool and hold it up to the light. I did, and when I did, I laughed because it sure did look like Texas to me. It is some sort of sign in a series of signs.

Lego Camera

Alli just sent the above link to me. I *heart* her!
I wonder if the lego camera, once built, requires as much duct tape as a Holga? I would imagine so.

Nice Day

I just got home from the studio. It is a beautiful Bay Area day. I am going to open the curtains and water the plants now.

The Right Now

When I had the burn on my stomach from the skillet handle
When there was the pain on my right eyelid
When we twisted your hair into knots
The way I held the orange juice container in my hand
Watching television during the day and at night
Sitting on the couch cutting out small triangles from magazines
Ready to say the real yes
Getting better
Coughing less
Sleeping through the night
listening to cassettes during breakfast
and twisting the curtains around each other to keep them open
