I shot this guy's wedding

Saturday: I shot the wedding of a very nice couple in Redwood City. Sunday: I shot the wedding of a very fancy couple in Napa. Monday: We gardened all day and planted many lovely things in the yard. My body hurts. I am tired.

Sunday's wedding was a crazy affair in which all the beautiful people came out in their fancy frocks to eat caviar at a villa belonging to people with lots of money and very bad taste in sculpture. Here is an example of one of the less frightening pieces:

The couple lives in LA and apparently the groom just directed his first feature film. Oh, it all made me so very tired.

Headbands A-Go-Go!

You may now officially add crafty girl or accessory-maker or something of the sort to my long list of varied neo-renaissance-woman-esque activities. Check out the link above to see the website of a super cool lady named Helen, and see the headbands that I am currently turning out for her by the dozens. You should buy some, because they rock, Helen rocks, and 'cause at least some of them are now proudly made by me in Oakland.

Also, many shouts out to the lovely people of the LoBot Gallery and curators of the SloMo Video festival for the truly magical evening on Saturday. Art, cookies, video, beer: what more could one ask for in a Saturday night?

I like the library

My mother done raised me right when she put the love of libraries in me. And now that I have realized how much better it is to check out movies from the library instead of paying 4 bucks to rent one, I have been frequenting my fine Oakland Public Library even more. Yesterday I got Powaqqatsi, The Discreet Charm of the bourgeoisie, Pollock and, for good measure, Sixteen Candles, all in one fell swoop. It is literally good.

Some more quotes for you

from Slacker:

Hitchhiker: I may live badly, but at least I don't have to *work* to do it.

Old Man: When young, we mourn for one woman... as we grow old, for women in general. The tragedy of life is that man is never free yet strives for what he can never be. The thing most ferared in secret always happens. My life, my loves, where are they now? But the more the pain grows, the more this instinct for life somehow asserts itself. The necessary beauty in life is in giving yourself to it completely. Only later will it clarify itself and become coherent.

Working on Same Painting: Sorry, I'm late.
Having a Breakthrough Day: That's okay, time doesn't exist.

Drawl

When we were in Austin, we stayed near the Texas State School for the Deaf. I was suddenly thinking of it the other day and wondered, can one have, say, a southern accent to their sign language? Cale and I concluded overwhelmingly YES. Apparently Cale has been trying this theory out, as he has lost his voice and has been communicating with me via sign language, but I think his accent is pretty thick. Or maybe it's just that I don't know sign language. But I am getting very good at posing yes or no questions. It is rather interesting in it's own right. What would your sign language accent be?

When it comes to regional dialects, I have noticed that my use of the word "gnarly" has increased ten fold since moving to California. I find this to be both troubling and rather quaint.

Have your cake and top it, too

Today I told Cale that I don't like cake toppers. However, today I also had the pleasure of shooting the wedding of Latisha and Donn and, as far as cake toppers go, I find this one to be pretty groovy.

Hearts, stars and horseshoes!

Clovers and blue moons! Pots of gold and rainbows! And the red balloons!

So, I don't know if it's all the Lucky Charms I ate during that brief interlude in which I was finally allowed junky cereals but had not yet realized what marshmallows are made of, but somehow I now often find myself feeling like a very lucky girl. Sorry if this is too sappy for your taste, but I literally have the best partner on the planet. Here he is rocking out with his bad self in Austin. Plus, he actually reads my blog and for that alone I love him. Cale, you are awesome!

All that remained

This is the GM Steakhouse in Austin. In Slacker, the guy goes here and it if full of crazies, including the lady who says "You should quit, I should know I'm a medical doctor." Well, when in Austin we visited nearly all of the old sites from Slacker but they are all now Starbucks or Quiznos or other such nonsense. The GM was the one place we had heard tale was still open. But when we arrived for breakfast one morning we found it closed, with fresh For Lease signs up, and ashtrays full of cigarette butts still on the counter.

Chicken & Roses

Fair people, I recommend starting your day with chicken and roses. No, don't eat the chicken of course! But early this morning I took a stroll down to the rose garden and saw that the roses are now showing themselves and also that there are two ducks on the pond. And then I saw the chickens that live nearby and they were so sleepy! I'm telling you, those are not morning chickens. But I found that viewing these things is is a good way to start the day.
